Sparrow tattoos have been around long before Jack Sparrow ever sailed the high seas. A sparrow tattoo has a very specific symbolism which many people find touching.
True Love
It is long been believed that Sparrows mate for life although some recent scientific studies have raised a doubt that this is actually true. Whether the situation is true or not the belief is embraced and admired by those people who believe in monogamy and who find the sparrow a great comfort and inspiration. When sparrow tattoos are worn to support this notion you will often see the tattoo feature two sparrows instead of just one.
Protection For Sailors
Did you know that in the very old days, sailors were rewarded with a sparrow tattoo for every 50,000 miles they sailed. Don’t you think that this is a unique way of showing somebody has had a particular occupation? There is a legend – and this one does have some scientific backing – that sparrows always know the way home. If you support this view then it is likely that no matter how far a sparrow tattoo wearer may roam, he or she will always somehow find a way to return to the ones they love.
Freedom
Another group of people who often elect to have a sparrow tattoo are former prisoners or a survivor from a particular catastrophe who choose to get a sparrow tattoo, to remind them that they survived their time of imprisonment but are now free. Sparrows, as well as birds in general, can also symbolize the souls’ freedom from the body. In Ancient Egypt, it was thought that sparrows acted like a psycho-pomp, bringing the souls of the dead to rest among the stars. Some might get a sparrow tattoo as a poetic reminder and tribute to the important people in their lives who have passed on.
In recent times, many species of sparrow have become gravely endangered with even the common English ‘House sparrow’ which was once the most common bird now threatened with extinction. For those who work for environmental causes a swallow tattoo is a reminder to keep on fighting and pushing for what they believe in
Some people get a swallow tattoo for reasons only they know and are unlikely to share with anyone other than their closest and most trusted friends and family.
