Friday, October 24th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedNobody can be sure when the first tattoos existed but they have been around for thousands of years in many different cultures. Until fairly recently they were not considered to be something done by polite company but these days everybody can have them without worrying what people might think.
The word tattoo is said to come from a Tahitian word which means to mark. The sailors who arrived in Tahiti did not have tattoos and were surprised to discover the Polynesians were covered with tattoos. Later native American Indians were also found to have extensive tattoos. In Europe the art of tattooing had almost disappeared at this time.
Anybody who thinks about getting themselves tattooed has their own reasons for wanting one. You might want to have one as a demonstration of your independence or you may want one simply as a work of art. Whatever your own reasons, it is a very personal choice but that has not always been the case. While the first tattoos may have been purely decorative in nature early Romans used tattooing as a type of classification system. Slaves and criminals in particular were tattooed with a symbol to show other people the status they held whereas in Tahiti, tattoos were symbolizing the journey of your life and were part of the tribal rituals. Today most people who get a tattoo today do for decorative reasons simply because they like them.
The idea with a tattoo is to puncture the skin and then fill the puncture with ink which remains under the skin. This used to be done by simply pricking the skin with some sharp object and then rubbing ink into the puncture to create the design. These days tattoo equipment can inject the pigment with a needle.
The tattooist was always an artist but he could only give you designs that he had experience of doing in the past or had thought of himself. With the development of the internet this has changed and you can now download thousands of printable tattoo designs to choose the one you like best. Once you have made your choice you can print it out on any printer and take it along to your local tattoo artist who can copy it onto whichever part of your body you choose.
